The Yokohama Avid Ascend GT Tire stands out with its unique features tailored for diverse weather conditions. Its design ensures a smooth ride while offering reliable traction thanks to the features below:

- The tread’s pitch variation and Outside Adaptive Shoulder Blocks reduce road noise. The Avid Ascend’s tread profile allows for a comfortable driving experience.
- Another feature that impresses our PPMC team is the four deep circumferential grooves, which channel water away from the tire to prevent hydroplaning.
Adding to its wet road prowess, the tire’s inside shoulder has open notches for optimized water evacuation, contributing to its impressive wet traction.

Performance Assessment
1. Dry Surfaces
I had the opportunity to assess the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT on dry surfaces. During our tests, the Avid Ascend GT tires performed remarkably well. They felt great on summer roads, with reliable traction and grip.
I could navigate tight corners at speeds higher than usual without activating the vehicle’s traction control system. This level of performance is a testament to the tire’s well-designed tread pattern and adaptive grip technology.
Keep in mind that I said “reliable” amount of traction and grip. The Avid Ascend loses that reliability when driving it at top speeds.
2. Wet Conditions
During the wet test, I noticed the tires had incredible feedback, enough to let me feel them gripping the wet surface. It’s a clear indication of the tire’s superior wet traction capabilities.
The design features of the Avid Ascend GT mentioned above undoubtedly played a significant role in this effective water evacuation and grip. However, its braking distance was slightly too long for my taste, mainly due to its lack of lateral interlocking siping.
In short, I can safely say this Yokohama tire gets a high score for its wet performance. According to his comment, redditor u/mikewinddale also seemed to agree with me: “The Avid Ascend GT have very good wet traction, and possibly the best comfort of any tire out there.”
3. Snow Surfaces
Our PPMC team’s evaluation of the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT on snowy surfaces showed that it could provide somewhat reliable traction in such a wintry setting. What impressed us was that the sipes didn’t get stiffened and lose their grip.
In addition, the tire’s narrow section width can trap snow in its sipes, allowing for snow-on-snow contact, which provides more friction than with just rubber.
Just to note, I tested the Avid Ascend on a mild snow surface. You do not want to use this during a blizzard or when the road is completely frozen.
4. Comfort
During our PPMC team’s assessment of the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT, the comfort level of these tires was impressive. That Outside Adaptive Shoulder Block was also flexing its capabilities during my drive, since I did not hear any noise.
Overall, driving the Avid Ascend GT was an incredible pleasure with its stable and noise-free performance, as evidenced by u/IWantToPlayGame’s comment, “I’ve got Yokohama tires on my ’14 Rolla right now. I’m loving them in terms of noise, comfort and grip.”
5. Treadwear
With a high UTQG rating of 740/A/A and a great tread depth of 12/32″, it’s unsurprising that the tire can last at least 65,000 miles, according to the brand’s treadwear warranty. That said, it’s reasonable to expect the Avid Ascend GT to last up to 90,000 miles.
