UITP – International Association of Public Transport

As a passionate champion of sustainable urban mobility, International Association of Public Transport is internationally recognized for its work in advancing the development of this critical policy agenda. It is the only worldwide network that brings together everyone involved in public transport but also a whole range of sustainable transport modes from all over the world. UITP’s network extends to more than 1,400 companies, over 16,000 contacts from 96 countries. So whether a public transport authority or operator, a policy decision-maker, a research institute or a company providing public transport-related products or services, UITP brings all the key players needed to scale up public transport and climate action under one roof.

Launched at the UN Climate Summit, UITP confirms public transport’s climate leadership with the UITP Declaration on Climate Leadership and brings around 350 future commitments and actions from 110 public transport undertakings.

  • Actions aimed at giving a greater role to public transport in mobility help decrease the regions carbon footprint. For example every additional tonne due to more public transport in New York and Rio, delivers a reduction of up to 7 tonnes of wider CO2 and these gains will grow as their commitments are realised.
  • Actions will also help organisations meet their emissions reduction targets, such as London’s public transport stretch target to cut emissions of CO2 per passenger-km by 40% by 2025 and Montreal’s GHG emissions intensity (g CO2e/passenger-km) reduction targets by 20% by 2020.
  • These actions will also support UITP’s goal to double the market share of public transport by 2025 (ptx2), which would prevent half a billion tons of CO2 equivalent in 2025.

The initiative also aims to help bring about policies that will double the market share of public by 2025 and COP21 offers the unique opportunity to scale up public transport solutions worldwide and demonstrate implementation of some of the commitments pledged.
