The official taxi company of United Kingdom’s capital London is selected as a Decarbonization Champion because of their progressive efforts for a clean and environmentally friendly taxi fleet.
The London Taxi Company opened an electric car production factory on 22 March 2017. The plant in Ansty builds the world’s first mass-market electric taxi. The £300 million investment creates 1,000 green jobs, including 300 engineers and 30 apprenticeships. The factory has the capacity to build 20,000 vehicles per year. A R&D division at the plant is going to develop new electric vehicles. For example, an electric light commercial vehicle is already in development.
London’s taxi company is part of the Taxis4SmartCities initiative whose members commits to energy transition of their fleet between 2020 and 2030. The taxi company of London was a forerunner by announcing their fleet renewal already in 2010.
