Alstom has set its targets for the energy efficiency of its solutions and its operations. The company will commit to an energy consumption reduction of its transport solutions of 20% by 2020 (compared to 2014 levels). Moreover, Alstom is committed to reducing the energy intensity of its operations by 10% by 2020.
Innovating for higher energy efficiency on all phases of the life-cycle
Alstom is currently developing entirely new types of fuel cell trains. The train will be completely emission-free and its noise level will be drastically reduced. Alstom is also developing a new generation of high-speed electric trains, which will be able to carry up to 750 people and will consume 35% less energy than the previous generation of HS trains.
The -20% target is expected to be achieved through innovations on the trains themselves but also on the infrastructure and the services offered. Alstom will for instance further reduce the weight of the trains and the resistance to motion. Optimized HVAC systems will be implemented for the different market segments through the use of CO2 sensors or similar and heat pumps will be proposed.
Collaborating with customers and suppliers
Alstom has established collaborative programmes with its customers in many countries in order to build the sustainable transport modes of tomorrow. Alstom is also committed to the sustainable sourcing of its products. In March 2015, the company joined Railsponsible -a collaborative procurement initiative focused on improving sustainability throughout the entire supply chain.
–10% of energy intensity for Alstom’s factories and sites
Alstom has defined its priorities for environmental management which includes water, waste and energy management. Energy intensity of operations (per hour worked) is tracked. Alstom has already succeeded in reducing the energy intensity of its operations by 18% since 2008.
Tracking energy performance of solutions
Alstom is the first manufacturer to have set a key performance indicators and a target on the energy performance of its solutions. This will allow the evolution of the energy performance to be tracked. The company is currently defining standard energy measurement methodologies to ensure consistency in data collection and deploying energy simulation for existing and future solutions.
This emission free trains are regional trains replacing diesel trains. In 2014 and 2015, Alstom signed Letters of Intent with German Länder of Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine‑Westphalia, Baden‑Württemberg, and the Calw district for the use of a new generation of emission‑free trains equipped with fuel cell drives.
Two prototypes will be tested in 2018.
The new train will be based on the CORADIA™ regional train. It will be completely emission‑free and its noise level will be drastically reduced, compared with the diesel version. Furthermore, through the use of energy storage, as well as an intelligent energy management system, the new train will consume less energy, compared with a conventional diesel multiple unit.
Regarding the production model of Hydrogen in Germany, this is beyond our scope. However the Clean Energy Partnership, a joint initiative of government and industry lead-managed by the German Ministry of Transport and Industry was established in 2002 to test the suitability of hydrogen as a fuel.
Since the beginning of the final phase of the project in 2011, the CEP has focused more on CO2-neutral hydrogen production through water electrolysis using energy from renewable sources, and on the production of hydrogen from biomass.
Alstom has reduced the GHG production of its operations from 145 (2010) to 115 (2014) kilotonnes of CO2 equivalent. A reduction of 20%. A further 10% reduction is targeted by 2020.
